The original company began in 1855 and 72 years ago George Carwardine, a car suspension engineer invented the desk light that utilized an ingenious system of balance using springs and the Anglepoise was born. It has since become widely viewed as an example of timeless British design. With the involvement of the founder’s great great grandson, Simon Terry, and Industrial Designer Kenneth Grange the company has evolved to become a design driven business.

Simon Terry, Director of Anglepoise Ltd said: “After 70 years of Anglepoise tradition, and 150 years of manufacturing we have always felt that it was important as a family business to rejuvenate the ideas that made us innovators in the first place. The new TypeC is at the heart of that journey “

Benchmark resolved to develop a concept for this year’s festival that would demonstrate not only their craftsmanship and design but also their innovative thinking and ability to deal with difficult and complex design problems. They’ve come up with an extraordinary exhibit – a gigantic 11m table.

The table will be made from a log that took 6 months to locate. It is the longest planked oak log that any of Benchmark’s sources in the timber trade has ever known. To machine the log, Benchmark has had to cut holes through the walls on either side of the workshop. It might be expected that a table of these proportions would need a substantial under frame but this table will deliver long, clean lines with minimal interference from the under structure as a result of an inventive design and intelligent use of materials.

Established by Terence Conran and Sean Sutcliffe in 1984, Benchmark is a design led manufacturer of furniture, specialist woodworking and metalwork that has built its reputation on a relentless attention to detail and finish.  Combining traditional quality with modern technology, it has a proven track record in the design, manufacture and installation of furniture for offices, public institutions, hotels, bars, restaurants and private homes as well as complex architectural joinery. Benchmark also has its own furniture collection by leading designers such as Terence Conran, Russell Pinch and Jens Risom which it sells direct from the workshops in Kintbury, West Berkshire.

Carl Hansen & Son celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2008. Only a few family-owned companies make it this far. Even fewer are the furniture manufacturers that span a century of changing tastes and technologies. Wegner began in 1949 – and was a turning point for them both.

Cassina, founded by Cesare and Umberto Cassina in 1927, launched industrial design in Italy during the 50’s. The company, pioneering and innovative, was the first to work side by side with architects and designers with differing backgrounds, encouraging them to envision fresh designs, a characteristic that still distinguishes the company today.

Over the years this collection has exclusively brought together some of the most iconic furniture by the great architects of modern classics working in close collaboration with the heirs and official foundations (Gerrit T. Rietveld, Charles R. Mackintosh, E. Gunnar Asplund, Frank Lloyd Wright, Charlotte Perriand and Franco Albini).

Today many important Italian and international designers and architects have collaborated and continue to collaborate for the Cassina I Contemporanei Collection including: Vico Magistretti, Gio Ponti, Mario Bellini, Gaetano Pesce, Rodolfo Dordoni, Philippe Starck and Piero Lissoni.

Since 2005 Cassina has been part of the Poltrona Frau Group, worldwide leader in the high-end furnishing sector and international spokesperson for the best design made in Italy.

Added Value?, a new touring exhibition from the Crafts Council, launches at this year’s designjunction.

Responding to current economic trends, Added Value?  will question the value of contemporary craft within the current landscape of branding and luxury.  Investigating differing perceptions of value, the exhibition will explore the increasing desire for authenticity, quality and craftsmanship, which is redefining our understanding of luxury.

Added Value? features contemporary, high-quality and bespoke objects by makers Zoe Arnold, Bompas & Parr, carréducker, Simon Hasan, Tracy Kendall and Oliver Ruuger. Through the work of each maker, Added Value? will question how and why we value objects and whether craft is a new language for luxury.

Join Grant Gibson, Crafts magazine Editor, Simon Hasan, product designer and Bruce Montgomery, Professor of Design Craftsmanship at Northumbria University at 1.30pm on Friday 21 September, at designjunction as they discuss the exhibition themes in a talk hosted by Aidan Walker, director, DesignJunction Theatre Programme.

In late 2008, the firm GAN was born to cover all the textile section. In the countries where the company is becoming established, it is culturally difficult to connect the same brand with outdoor furniture and textiles, so GAN was the result of the need to make a difference between the two vectors of the company.

In only a few months, GAN has been able to shine with its own light, playing with the quick connection to the traditional Gandia Blasco brand. GAN keeps the quality standards of its origins, not for nothing is the textile market the one that consolidated the company and witnessed its international rise.

×

The company Gandia Blasco was born in Ontinyent (Valencia) in 1941. It started with the production and manufacture of blankets, an activity that continued for 40 years with considerable success.

In 1996, Gandia Blasco launched the first outdoor furniture collection, designed by the architect Ramón Esteve with the participation of José A. Gandía-Blasco himself. It is the collection ‘Na Xemena’, which continues to be the icon of the company.

Gandia Blasco enriches the variety and style of the products with the diverse languages of the designers working with them. Both the textile line, which is being commercialised since 2008 with the brand name GAN, and the outdoor furniture collections, are signed by prestigious professional designers, such as Jean Marie Massaud, Patricia Urquiola, Marie Mees, Marisa Gallén, Sandra Figuerola, Ramón Esteve, Odosdesign, Francesc Rifé, etc.

Jake studied Industrial Design at Central St Martins College of Art and Design. He graduated in 1994 and began work designing retail interiors, working on shops, cafes and clubs. Jake then set up his own workshop, purchasing a mill and a lathe and started experimenting and developing products. His studio and workshop are now based in Clerkenwell.

Jake is happiest in the workshop trying to turn a paper concept into a reality and is proud that Motorlight is British designed and developed. His approach is to first conceive a product and control all processes through to manufacture – unusual in a world where product design is usually separate from the development and manufacturing side. Jake believes that having a ‘hands on’ approach to creating prototypes, testing and subsequently finishing products is an essential part of the design process.

Jake leads a small team of experienced design engineers in his studio. They focus their efforts on coming up with new product ideas that are visually stunning and go where no-one has gone before in providing innovative, functional benefits.

Designing is our labour of love, we develop or compose a context in which to design. We focus on the detail, embrace functionality and strive for high production values that allow our products to deliver something distinct with a character and beauty that others choose to live alongside. Thelermont Hupton was founded in 2004, award-wining and distributes worldwide.

Our new collection concentrates on repeating, components, shapes, patterns and colours, this creates a rhythm that bestows each piece with individual qualities and characteristics while presenting a coherent whole.

The items are predominantly constructed from European sourced FSC timbers and made by our partners in the UK

By repeating the components and shapes we have made them readily adaptable so they can meet individual customer’s requirements. Scale is also important to us and by delivering this functionality through essentially domestic sized proportions and combining this with the warmth and homeliness generated by the natural materials we believe the collection is equally suitable for private and public spaces

With the Mobile Bending Machine, two employees of THONET show how the backrest of the famous coffee house chair no. 214 is bended. With the help of the staff, energetic guests are always welcome to bend on their own.

It is often called the chair of all chairs – and rightfully so. No other chair has ever been reproduced as many times. It is an unparalleled success story. The basis for the chair was a new technique that enabled the bending of solid wood. Michael Thonet perfected the process during the 1850s and thus introduced serial production. And there was an ingenious distribution concept as well- 36 disassembled chairs could be packed in a single box and sent anywhere in the world. They were assembled on site – in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. Therefore, Thonet is considered a pioneer of industrial design, and chair no. 14, today 214, is considered the most successful industrial product in the world. In its 150 years of production, more than 60 million examples of the 214 chairs have been sold.

Träullit is a traditional family business, founded in 1946 in the forests of eastern Sweden, producing boards and panels of cement bound wood wool. The Träullit Dekor concept by Form Us With Love adds a design element to the mix, complimenting the practicality of the material by creating a simple but striking product.

Träullit products contain two of the world’s oldest building materials – wood and cement bound as wood wool. The combination is simple yet ingenious. Wood fibres give the product a heat-insulating, heat retaining and sound-absorbing structure. Cement is used as a binding agent and to provide strength, moisture resistance and fire protection.
Träullit products are sound absorbent, have excellent thermal insulation and high thermal storage capacities, are proven highly resistant to fire, mould and rot, have high moisture diffusion, high air permeability and the capability of absorbing and releasing water molecules from the air.

The Träullit Dekor collection will expand on an annual basis with new colours and new shapes being introduced. For the first collection, the shape has been inspired by natures own building blocks; the Hexagon. The 19×21 cm tiles are produced in a range of earthy colours with suitably nature-inspired names like Cloud, Moss, Leaf, Sky and Stone.

Young and Norgate make not manufacture.  A Devon-based furniture design company, they offer contemporary furniture that is unique, elegant and made to last.

Each piece of furniture is crafted by hand in their workshop, situated on the site of a converted cider press. A passionate group of designers and craftsman, they are driven by a love for timber and good design. Trees reflect something of ourselves in terms of their history, appearance and environment. As does good design. Young & Norgate combine both.

The initial collection is a venture into pared back design, incorporating considered functionality with high quality materials which age well over time.

Young & Norgate also create one off bespoke commissions and at that end of their business, ‘bespoke’ means exactly that.
